Saint Ambrose University


Saint Ambrose University is a private liberal arts school located in Davenport, Iowa. The school has a strong affiliation with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Davenport that began when it was founded in 1882 by Reverend John McMullen. Back then, the school was named St. Ambrose Seminary and focused on teaching men commerce and prepare them for ministry positions among other things. The school was located above what is now Sacred Heart Cathedral but eventually moved to its current location in 1885. In addition to its main campus in Davenport, the school has other sites in Burlington, Cedar Rapids, Muscatine, Ottumwa, Rock Island Arsenal, and Waterloo.

Educational Programs

Approximately 3,500 students are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate degree programs at Saint Ambrose. The school is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and offers over 70 majors and minors that students can study. Here is a sample of the degree programs you can earn at Saint Ambrose:

The Adult College Curriculum for Education and Leadership (ACCEL) program was designed to help students complete a bachelor degree program while continuing to work. Courses are delivered in multiple formats including over the Internet. This provides students with the flexibility they need to complete coursework in their own time. Students can enter one of six majors through this program including Business Administration and RN to BSN.

Students can take advantage of the study abroad program at Saint Ambrose to visit other countries, learn about different cultures, and earn college credit while doing so. There are short-term and semester-long programs. Saint Ambrose has programs in Ireland, Germany, Lithuania, Ecuador, England, Japan, and many others. To participate, students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, no restrictions on their accounts, and recommendations from faculty and the Dean of Students.


To be considered for admission, first-year students must have a 2.5 grade point average and an ACT score of 20 (SAT 950) or above or an ACT score of 18-19 and graduated in the top half of their class. Students that don’t meet the minimum requirements may be admitted on a conditional basis.

Transfer students must have completed at least 12 credits from an accredited college or university and have a minimum 2.0 grade point average. Students can transfer up to 60 credits from a two-year college and 90 credits from a four-year institution.

Here are the tuition and fees charged by Saint Ambrose University:

  • Undergraduate tuition (full time): $25,730 per year
  • Undergraduate tuition (part time): $798 per credit
  • ACCEL: $475 per credit
  • Housing: $2,300 to $3,275 per semester
  • Technology fee: $120 per semester

To pay for school, students can apply for state or federal financial aid by submitting the FAFSA. Another option is to apply for scholarship and grants available at Saint Ambrose and other private or non-profit organizations.

Campus Life

The school has residence halls, townhomes, and houses for students to live in. Residence halls are typically coed and offers double occupancy suites. Some have private bathrooms. All housing facilities are furnished with beds, dressers, closets, and desks. Wireless internet and cable are included. Townhomes and houses come equipped with furniture for the living room and fully equipped kitchens.

Saint Ambrose has about 22 varsity sports programs for men and women including baseball, bowling, cheerleading, cross country, softball, soccer, tennis, and volleyball. Student organizations found on campus include Sports Management Society, Multicultural Affairs, Psi Chi, Active Minds, and Campus Activities Board.
