Mount Mercy University


Mount Mercy University is a four-year Catholic liberal arts institution. Located in Cedar Rapids, the school was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1928 as a two-year college for women. The school was accredited by the North Central Association as a bachelor degree granting school in 1960. In August 2010, the school’s designation changed and it became Mount Mercy University. Approximately 1,800 students attend Mount Mercy, 70% of which are women. The school is affiliated with the Council for Mercy Higher Education.

Educational Programs

Mount Mercy University has 40 undergraduate, graduate, and minor degree programs in 8 academic departments. It also has 8 accelerated bachelor’s degree programs designed specifically for working adults. The school is accredited to award Bachelor of Applied Arts, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Applied Science, and Bachelor of Science degrees among others. The school has a study abroad program that allows students to take courses in other countries. Programs range in length from one week to a full year and are held in countries such as the Czech Republic, England, and Italy. Students can enter internships and even teach courses overseas. These programs require some preparation time, so you should start the application process months in advance.

Highly motivated and accomplished students can take Honors general educational classes. These classes allow students to take a more active role in their educations. Students who complete this program will be honored as graduating with Distinction in the Honors Program. To enter, first-year students must score a 26 or better on the ACT, have a minimum GPA of 3.6, and graduate in the first quartile of their class. Transfer students must have a GPA of 3.5 or better and earned at least 24 semester hours.

Admission Criteria

To be eligible for admission to Mount Mercy, first-year students are required to have a cumulative GPA of 2.75, a composite ACT score of 20 (940 SAT), and rank in the top 50% of their class. Students should also have completed 4 years of English, and three years of math, social studies, and science. Students who don’t meet the minimum requirements but warrant a closer look will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee.

Transfer students must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 and at least two semesters of college credit. Students who attended Kirkwood or Hawkeye Community College and graduated from an A.A. or A.S. with a 2.0 GPA will automatically be accepted.

International students must meet the same requirements at freshman and transfer students, but must also pass an English proficiency test. The minimum accepted score for the TOEFL is 550 (paper) or 213 (computer) and 6.5 for the IELTS. Students must also submit a certificate of finance or affidavit from the bank stating there are enough funds to cover school expenses.

Paying for college can be a challenge. However, there are a number of resources available to help you with your college expenses. Mount Mercy College has several need- and merit-based scholarships. Students can also apply for federal financial aid. Word-study programs are available as well.

Campus Life

Undergraduate students are required to live on campus for the first four semesters of college. The school has traditional dorms, two-bedroom apartments, and suites. Housing options range from single to double rooms with shared bathrooms, living rooms, and kitchenettes. All accommodations are furnished and come equipped with basic cable, internet, and private telephones.

There are plenty of opportunities to be active at school. Men’s and women’s sports programs include baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, golf, soccer, track and field, softball, and volleyball. There are also plenty of student clubs and organizations such as Band Club, Peer Ministry, Criminal Justice Association, Honors Student Association, Leisure Club, Mount Mercy Cheerleading Squad, Political Science Club, Stang Gang, and Student Ambassadors.
