Iowa Wesleyan College

Located in Mount Pleasant, Iowa Wesleyan College (IWC) is a private four-year school that is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The school was founded in 1842 and is recognized as being the oldest coeducational college west of the Mississippi river. IWC was built on land donated by four Mount Pleasant residents and is home to Old Main and the Harlan-Lincoln House, two structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Approximately 850 students attend Iowa Wesleyan College. Notable alumni include Bell Babb Mansfield – the first female lawyer in the U.S., Peggy Whitson, and James Van Allen.

The school also has a number of minor programs that allow students to pursue a passion or round out their education. Minor programs include Economics, Physical Education, and Art Education.

Students can obtain hands-on experience in their chosen major by participating in an internship. Iowa Wesleyan College has affiliations with a number of local and regional companies and organizations that are happy to put students to work. In addition to being able to put their knowledge to use in the real world, internships provide students with the precious experience employers look for in prospective employees.


To be considered for admission to IWC, first-year students must have a cumulative G.P.A of 2.5 or above and a composite ACT score of 19 (or SAT of 890). Students that don’t meet these minimum requirements may be admitted on a conditional basis. They can also petition the Admissions Advisory Committee for a decision. The committee will factor information obtained from other sources, such as personal interviews or statements and teacher recommendations, into their decision.

Transfer students must have a minimum grade point average of 2.0 in all coursework and be in good standing with the educational institution they are leaving. International students must demonstrate proficiency with the English language by taking the TOEFL test and earning a minimum score of 500 or by completing ELS Level 112.

Iowa Wesleyan College Tuition Costs

Iowa Wesleyan College is a private school, so there is no difference between tuition for residents and non-residents. Tuition and fees for the 2012-2013 school years are:

  • Full-time tuition: $24,300 per year
  • Part-time tuition: $610 per credit
  • Extended learning: $400 per credit
  • Housing: $3,140 to $5,470 per year depending on room type

Approximately 95% of the students at IWC receive some type of financial aid. Assistance can be obtained from the federal government by submitting the FAFSA form. The college also awards scholarships to eligible students. Other finance options include obtaining loans, scholarships, and grants from private organizations and finding employment through the work-study program.

Wesleyan College Campus Life

As a residential college, full-time students under the age of 22 must live on campus. Married students, students living with their parents in the local area, veterans, and students with children are exempt from this requirement. The school has residence halls and apartment-style complexes. All rooms are furnished and apartments come equipped with kitchenettes.

IWC has numerous ways for students to interact with each other outside of the classroom. For athletically minded men and women, the school offers basketball, soccer, track, baseball, football, golf, and volleyball. Student clubs and organizations include the Student Union Board, College Radio (IWCR), Student Government Association, and Concert Choir.
