Iowa State University

Iowa State University of Science and Technology (ISU) is a research university located in Ames, Iowa. It is also a space-grant and land-grant public university. Established in 1858, the school is notable for a number of reasons. Since its inception, ISU was a coeducational school whose first graduating class in 1872 consisted of 2 women and 24 men. The university established the first veterinary college in the nation in 1879. However, the school is most well known for producing a high number of Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners as well as scientists, astronauts and other people notable in their fields such as George Washington Carver and Carrie Chapman Catt.

Students can also enhance their education by pursuing a minor degree. The school offers 15 pre-professional programs that prepare students to advance to the next level of education for their chosen career field. Pre-professional programs include Dentistry, Hospital and Health Administration, Law, Pharmacy, and Veterinary Medicine.

Iowa State University Admissions

Admission to Iowa State University is competitive. First-year students are evaluated based on a number of factors including grade point average, composite ACT score, high school percentile rank, and number and type of classes completed in the core subject areas. Students must graduate from an accredited high school or have an equivalent diploma such as a GED. Home schooled students must provide documentation that proves they studied the required subject matter.

To receive credit for college-level courses, transfer students must earn at least a 2.0 in the class. Some degree programs may require a higher G.P.A. for certain classes. Those that have completed less than 24 credits from a post-secondary institution must submit ACT or SAT scores and their high school transcripts.

International students must prove English proficiency by earning TOEFL scores of 71 (internet) or 530 (paper). IELTS scores over 5.5 and SAT Critical Reading scores over 420 are also acceptable. There are a number of way students can pay for their education at ISU. The most common way is to use federal financial aid which can be obtained by submitting the FAFSA. The school also has a number of scholarships and grants for eligible students. Loans and student work-study programs are available as well.

Campus Life

There are several housing options available to students that wish to live on campus. Most incoming freshmen live in the dormitories which are organized into single, double, and triple occupancy rooms. Upperclassmen have access to apartment-style residences that offer a little more privacy. Fraternities and sororities also provide housing for members.

For socializing and having fun, students can get involved in sports or student organizations. The sports programs available include basketball, football, golf, wrestling, gymnastics, tennis, and volleyball. There are over one hundred student organizations including Alpha Phi Omega and Fulbright Students and Scholars.
