Grand View University

Grand View University is a private non-profit liberal arts school located in Des Moines, Iowa. The school was established in 1896 and is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Grand View University used to be a two-year college known as Grand View College, but has since expanded it educational offerings to include bachelors and masters degrees. It changed its name to Grand View University in 2008. Approximately 2,300 students attend this school.

The College for Professional and Adult Learning offers 16 majors including Nursing and Criminal Justice degrees that students can earn by attending evening and weekend classes. This program is great for people that work during the day but want to obtain additional education so they can further their careers.


The university reviews each application on a case-by-case basis. The school considers the applicant’s test scores, high school curriculum, class rank, extra-curricular activities, and personality as indicated by family, school, work, and community activities. High school students should take college preparatory courses that include 4 years of English, 2 years of a foreign language, and 3 years of math, science, and social science.

First-year students, transfer students with less than 24 credit hours, and international students must submit high school transcripts and ACT or SAT scores. Transfer students need to also submit transcripts from all colleges attended. International students are required to send in their TOEFL scores. The minimum passing score is 550 (paper) or 77 (Internet). They must also fill out the Official Certification of Finances form detailing they have adequate financial support for their tuition and related fees.

International students are required to submit a deposit of $1,700 after they have been accepted into the college.

Tuition and fees at Grand View University are as follows:

  • Tuition: $10,718 per semester/$534 per credit (over 18 hours or part time)
  • Evening/Weekend Courses: $319 per credit
  • Military Tuition: $250 per credit
  • Graduate Tuition: $501 per credit
  • Summer tuition: $319 per credit
  • Activity Fee: $75 per semester
  • Technology Fee: $120 per semester
  • Room and Board: $2,831 to $5,345 depending on living arrangement

In addition to federal student aid, Grand View has a number of scholarships available for students that need help paying for their education. Students in teaching and nursing programs may qualify for forgivable loans available through state and federal programs. More information about this can be found on the school’s website.

Campus Life

On-campus housing at Grand View University consists of dormitories, suites, and apartments. Freshmen and sophomores typically live in the dorms and suites, while the upperclassmen live in the apartments. Rooms are furnished with desks, beds, dressers, and closets. The apartments are equipped with kitchens. All rooms have access to the Internet and cable television. Electronic security systems are installed on all buildings.

There are a number of athletic programs, student clubs, and school organizations that students can join. Athletic programs for men and women includes baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, football, golf, soccer, indoor/outdoor track and field, tennis, volleyball, wrestling, softball, cheerleading, and competitive dance.
