Graceland University

Graceland University is a private 4-year liberal arts school with two locations: Lamoni, Iowa and Independence, Missouri. The school is affiliated with the Community of Christ which founded the school in 1895 as Lamoni College. Approximately 1,700 students attend Graceland University and the university was recognized as one of the top Midwest schools by the Princeton Review. Notable alumni that attended the school include Pulitzer Prize winning author Teresa Carpenter, Dr. David Carmichael, and Bruce Jenner.

Graceland University Degree Programs

The 79 full-time faculty members at Graceland University provide instruction for over 50 undergraduate, graduate, and pre-professional programs. In addition to that, you can round out your education by pursuing any one of the school’s 32 minors. Here are some of the undergraduate degrees you can earn at the university:

Many of the master degrees can be earned online through the school distance learning program. This is a great option for students who are unable to attend onsite classes due to responsibilities at work or home.

Minors are an excellent way to pursue a passion or increase your proficiency in a particular area. Minor degree programs include Accounting, Cinema Studies, Communications, Economics, History, Music, Political Science, Sport Management, and Theatre.

Graceland has an Accelerated Education Program that allows students to earn college credit while still in high school. Juniors and seniors with at least a 3.0 grade point average and recommendations from their school principals or counselors can apply to the program. The courses are taught via the Internet and cost $250.

Admissions

To be considered for admission to the school as an undergraduate, U.S. and Canadian applicants must meet two of the three criteria:

  • A composite ACT score of 21 or SAT score of 960
  • Rank in the upper 50% of your high school class
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 2.5

If you do not submit ACT or SAT scores, you will be required to take a placement test that will determine what classes you can register for. Students that don’t meet the requirements will be considered on a case-by-case basis and may be required to take developmental courses if accepted to the university.

International students are welcomed to apply, but must meet at least two of the three criteria:

  • TOEFL score of 550 (paper), 80 (Internet), or 213 (computer)
  • Academic proficiency above the average student
  • Show proof of ability to cover educational expenses

Transfer students must earn at least a 2.0 grade on all classes they wish to obtain credit for. There are additional requirements for homeschooled students. More information can be obtained by visiting the school’s website.

Graceland University Tuition Costs

Tuition and fees at the Lamoni campus are as follows:

  • Tuition: $11,165 per semester
  • Room: $2,280 per semester based on double occupancy
  • Activity fee: $175

In addition to federal financial aid, students can apply for state financial aid, scholarships, and grants. Graceland University has several need-based and academic-based scholarships for eligible students. Students can also pay for their education using a payment plan.

Campus Life

All undergraduate students under 23 years of age must live on campus. On-campus housing consists of residence halls and apartments. There are two men’s and two women’s dormitories while the single-gender apartments are located in coed buildings. In addition to standard dorm furnishings, all housing has wireless and wired Internet service.

Graceland University does not have fraternities or sororities. Instead, the school assigns students to “houses”. These houses have councils that include presidents, student academic council members, and a senator that represents the house in student government. These houses typically plan activities and serve as social hubs for students.

The athletic programs available at Graceland include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, softball, dance team, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. There are over 50 clubs and student organizations including History Club, Acacia Yearbook, and Americorps.
