Drake University

Located on 120 acres in Des Moines, Iowa, Drake University is a private co-educational university. It is home to one of the oldest law schools in the country and claims Dwight D. Opperman and former U.S. Representative Neal Smith among its alumni. The school was founded in 1881 by Francis Marion Drake who was the governor of Iowa at the time. However, the law school was established prior to that in 1865 by Chester C. Cole who was an Iowa Supreme Court judge. Approximately 3,500 students attend Drake University.

 Drake University Admissions

The school reviews each application on a case-by-case basis, so there is no set standard for grade point average or test scores for general entry. However, each college within the university has own set of admission requirements, especially for graduate degree programs. It is best to contact the college within Drake for more information about entry requirements for specific programs.

In addition to an application, students must submit a personal essay. First-year students must submit a High School Report and Counselor Recommendation supplement. Transfer students need to submit copies of transcripts from all post-secondary schools attended. International students are required to submit a summary of extracurricular activities, TOEFL or IELTS scores indicating proficiency in English, letters of recommendation, and a financial certificate providing evidence that money is available for school expenses.

 Drake University Tuition and Fees

The costs of attending Drake University in the 2012-2013 school years are as follows:

  • Full-time tuition: $29,410 per year
  • Room: $4,560 (based on double occupancy)
  • Student activity fee: $146

Approximately 98% of students at Drake University receive financial assistance. The average amount of financial aid received by students was $21,130 in 2008. In addition to federal grants and loans, there are scholarship opportunities and work-study programs available to help students pay for their education.

Campus Life

For the first two years following high school graduation, full-time students are required to live on campus unless they are married or live at home. Room assignments are made based on the information provided on the housing application. There are five residence halls onsite which are supervised by residence assistants. All rooms are furnished and have cable and Internet service.

Drake University is a member of the Missouri Valley Conference and the Pioneer Football League. The school competes at the NCAA Division I Level. Sports programs available at Drake include football, basketball, cross country, track and field, soccer, golf, tennis, crew, volleyball, and softball. There are also a number of intramural and club sports for those that are not interested in varsity athletics.
