Dordt College

Located in Sioux Center, Iowa, Dordt College is a private, Christian, liberal arts school that is affiliated with the Christian Reformed Church. The school was founded in 1953 as Midwest Christian Junior College. In 1956, the school’s name was changed to Dordt after a Reformed church meeting that took place in the Netherlands in the 17th century called the Synod of Dordt. Since 1993 Dordt College has been included in the America’s Best Colleges publication put out by U.S. News and World Report. The school enrolls approximately 1,300 students per year.

Dordt College awards associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees in over 41 majors and pre-professional programs. The goal of the college is to provide a liberal arts education that integrates the viewpoint of the Reformed, Christian religion. In addition to on-campus programs, Dordt College offers students opportunities to earn college credit off campus. There are about 30 programs and they range from three weeks to whole semesters. Students can earn up to 16 credits while studying in other places like Australia, Africa, and Central America. Some programs are designed for specific majors while other focus on Christian service.

Dordt College Admissions

Admission requirements may vary depending on the program you are applying to. Freshman applicants must have graduated (or be on track to graduate) from an accredited high school program or have a high school diploma equivalent. Students must have a minimum grade point average is 2.25 and ACT composite score of 19 or SAT composite score of 1380.

Transfer students are welcomed at Dordt College. Students must submit transcripts from all post-secondary schools attended. To be eligible for transfer credit, you must earn at least a C- in the class. A maximum of 61 credits will be awarded to students who graduate from a community college. The minimum grade point average for transfer students is 2.0.

International students must take an English proficiency test and submit the results with their application. To be considered for admission, non-native English speakers must earn at least a 550 (paper) or 79 (Internet) on the TOEFL or a 6.5 on the IELTS. All international students, except Canadians, must participate in the Entrance Interview for International/ESL Students.

An enrollment deposit of $100 is required within 21 days of being accepted to the college.

Dordt College Tuition Costs

Students at Dordt College paid the following costs during the 2011-2012 school years:

  • Full-time tuition: $12,550 per semester
  • Overload fee: $320 per credit
  • Part-time: $1,050 per credit
  • Room and board: $2,550 to $3,615 per semester
  • Activity fee: $210 per semester
  • Books: $400 to $1,000 per semester

Students can pay their tuition in full using cash, checks, money orders, or credit cards. A payment plan is also available that allows students to pay tuition in 4 monthly installments each semester. Financial aid, scholarships, and grants are also available to students that need financial assistance.

Campus Life

Approximately 90% of the students at Dordt College live on campus. Freshmen and sophomores live in dormitories while juniors and seniors have the option of living in the dorms or apartment-style complexes. Dorm rooms are furnished with beds, closets, desk and chairs, a small refrigerator, and bookcases for two people. The apartments are furnished with beds, stoves, refrigerators, and living room furniture.

There is no lack of activities for students to participate in. Students can join one of the many sports programs available at the school which include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, softball, track and field, volleyball, hockey, and lacrosse. There are also a number of student clubs such as the Ag Club, Comedy League, Computer Club, Faith and Film, Monday Morning Coffee Club, Nursing Club, Sioux Falls Prison Ministry, and the Swing Dance Club. There is a campus ministry with onsite chapel, Sunday worship, and yearly retreats.
