Divine Word College

Divine Word College (DWC) is a Roman Catholic seminary school for men located in Epworth, Iowa, in the Archdiocese of Dubuque. It bills itself as a liberal arts college. The school prepares men to become priests, brothers, and for other missionary vocations in the Society of Divine Word religion that was founded in 1875 by Arnold Janssen. The college itself was established in 1964 replacing a Society of Divine Word high school seminary called St. Paul’s Mission House. At this time, there are over 6,000 men performing mission services in over 70 countries.

Divine Word College Educational Programs

Divine Word College has four educational programs that terminate in a degree:

  • Associate of Arts in Cross Cultural Studies
  • Bachelor of Arts in Cross Cultural Studies
  • Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies
  • Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy

The school has an English as a Second Language (ESL) program that consists of 18 to 21 hours of coursework per week. Students are also afforded opportunities to venture outside the classroom on expeditions and retreats to put what they learn to good use. The ESL Institute where the course is taught has a computer lab with 10 computers that is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Other tools for learning English, such as novels, are also available.

Starting in the fall 2012 and lasting through spring 2014, Divine Word College will offer one online theology class per semester. These accredited courses are open to high school seniors and those with high school diplomas or GEDs.

Admissions

Prospective seminary students are interviewed over the phone and in person by a vocational director. The director is looking for several personal characteristics that speak to the candidate’s commitment to becoming a missionary such as:

  • Desire to pursue priesthood or brotherhood
  • Active participation in the church
  • A sincere desire to become a missionary
  • Willing to live in a multi-cultural environment
  • Physically and mentally healthy
  • A sense of purpose in his life
  • Social skills
  • Religious spirit
  • Ability to remain celibate for a period of time

The student will be provided application materials only after the vocational director has determined the student is a good fit for the seminary program. As part of the application process the prospective student must submit an autobiography, provide a pastoral and two professional recommendations, SAT or ACT scores, baptismal and confirmation certificates, submit to a criminal background check, provide two photos, submit a health report, and sit for psychological testing.

Non-seminary students can also apply to the college. There is a different application process and requirements depending on if the student is degree-seeking, non-degree seeking, or attending the school on a temporary basis. However, the academic credentials are basically the same. At minimum, a student must:

  • Have at least a 2.0 grade point average
  • Rank in the upper two-thirds of their class
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Provide SAT or ACT scores

International students will need to submit TOEFL scores or take an English proficiency test at the college. Scores from the ACT Compass Test may be submitted in lieu of TOEFL.

Divine Word College Tuition Costs

For the academic school years of 2012-2013, students can expect the following expenses:

  • Full-time tuition: $12,600
  • Part-time tuition: $400 per credit
  • Room and board: $3,300
  • Books and supplies: $500 to $700
  • Student activity fee: $40

A fifty-percent discount on tuition will be given to students over the age of 55. Students can pay for their tuitions using financial aid. The school also has a number of scholarships available for those that need financial assistance.

Campus Life

The school is situated a few minutes away from the Port of Dubuque which offers a variety of recreational activities for students to participate in. In addition to that, the school has an auditorium/gymnasium that can accommodate a number of sports and cultural events. Though the college doesn’t have a formal sports program, they do have a pool, soccer field, and tennis courts. There is also an art gallery and a display of unique artifacts on campus.

Divine Word College has a FAN (Friends Across Nations) club that matches students with local families to help them develop social connections off campus.
