Coe College

Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, Coe College is a private liberal arts college that sits on 50 acres in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The school has been recognized in several national magazines including the Princeton Review’s “376 Best Colleges” and Barron’s “300 Best Buys in College Education”. Founded in 1851, Coe College educates about 1,300 students per year and is part of the Associated Colleges of the Midwest. Notable Coe alumni include Chris Funk, Jason Kottke, and Shelby Steele.

It is important to connect with an advisor to plan your curriculum as early in your undergraduate studies as possible to ensure you obtain the education you need to enter competitive schools.

The school also offers a Master of Arts in Teaching.

Admission Requirements

Coe College is a selective school that only admits well-prepared students who will benefit from and make the most of the exceptional education they will receive from the university. To be considered for admission, you must have a minimum grade point average of 3.6 and an ACT score of 25 (or SAT score of 1000) or higher. Coe looks for students who are active and show leadership skills, so being involved in community or school organizations is essential if you want to be considered for admission.

To apply to the school you must submit an application, official transcripts from all schools attended, test scores, a recommendation from a teacher or counselor, and a personal essay. Students are not required to sit for an interview but encouraged to participate in one so the administration can get to know you better.

International students must submit copies of all national exam scores relevant to their countries. If English is not your first language, you must submit the appropriate English testing score. The minimum acceptable scores are:

  • PTE Academic score of 59 or over
  • TOEFL 520 paper based, 190 computer based, or 68 internet based testing
  • STEP Eiken grade 1 or pre-1
  • IELTS core of 6.5 and no sub-score less than 6

International students must also fill out the International Student Financial Statement and provide documentation that proves they have sufficient funds to cover their educational expenses. Once accepted to the school, a $200 deposit is required to secure your place.

Tuition Costs

For the 2012-2013 school years, tuition and fees at Coe College are:

  • Tuition: $33,900 per year
  • Student Fees: $320 per year
  • Room: $3,400 per year
  • Books: $600-1,000 per year

In addition to financial aid, the school offers payment plans, scholarships, and grants to help students pay for their educations. In 2011, students received an average of $29,000 in financial aid assistance.

Campus Life

Coe College encourages students to live on campus. They have a number of residence halls that all include kitchen facilities, vending machines, laundry facilities, and areas for studying and activities. Some of the housing is setup as regular dormitories with bunk beds, desks and chairs, dressers, and small sitting areas. There are apartment-style buildings that can accommodate up to 32 students. These apartments typically contain 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a living room, and kitchen.

Upperclassmen can live in Kohawk village which is a substance-free ranch-style residence. Rooms are configured into singles or doubles. Students share bathrooms, a lounge area, large kitchen, and dining room. You are not required to purchase a meal plan if you live in this facility.

If you are interested in sports, Coe has plenty of programs for men and women. The school has baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor/outdoor track and field, wrestling, softball, and volleyball teams for those athletically inclined.

Student clubs and organizations are plentiful on campus and include Chemistry Club, Coe Triathlon, Phi Beta Kappa, Lambda Chi Alpha, and Geek Fest. As a religiously-affiliated school, Coe also has a school ministry lead by an ordained Presbyter
