Central College Pella

Central College is a 4-year private liberal arts college located on 130 acres in Pella, Iowa. The school was founded by the Baptist Convention of Iowa in 1853 as Central University but was sold to the Reformed Church in America in 1916, with whom the school has been affiliated with ever since. Central College is known for its study-abroad program. The school boasts small classes and 97% of its graduates find employment or enter graduate school within a year after obtaining their degree. Notable alumni include Bruce Green, Bernadette Allen, and Steve Bell.

Central College Educational Programs

At Central College, you can earn one of 39 degrees or complete a pre-professional program. However, the school also has a program that allows students to design their own major. A sample of the bachelor’s degrees you can earn at the college includes:

The school has two separate programs that students can complete alongside their majors. One is Global Sustainability, which is a minor. The other is Entrepreneurship. While the Entrepreneurship program does not terminate in a degree, it is designed to provide students with the skills and practical experience needed to be successful in the real world.

As mentioned before, the school is well known for its study abroad program. Students can study in seven places overseas:

  • Merida, Yucatan
  • Paris, France
  • Vienna, Austria

The programs are run by resident directors that help students adjust to life in a new country and get the most out of their experience overseas. Students are expected to complete an on-site orientation program and a culture course. A number of cultural activities are also included, some of which connect directly to course work. Overseas internships and service-learning opportunities are available to eligible students.


Central College accepts high school, transfer, and international students. To be considered for admission, students must have graduated (or are expected to graduate) from an accredited high school program or equivalent, be in the upper 50 percent of their graduating class, and score high on the ACT or SAT.

International students must complete an essay describing how Central College can help them achieve their person or professional goals, obtain a minimum TOEFL score of 530, submit a letter of recommendation from a school official, and complete the International Student Certification of Finances form.

Tuition for the 2012-13 school years breaks down as follows:

Financial aid options are available to qualified students. This includes federal student loans, monthly payment plans, work-study programs, scholarships, and need-based grants.

Campus Life

Students are required live on campus for the entire four years they are in school. The only exceptions to this rule are for people who are married, are 23+ years old, have children, or are military veterans. Roommates are assigned by mid-July for the fall school year and are matched according to the information students provide on their residence hall applications. All rooms come furnished with a closet, dresser, desk and chair, and bed. Access to cable television, the Internet, and a landline is provided.

If you enjoy playing sports, then you’ll be happy to know that Central College has an active athletic program for men and women. The programs for women include basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, volleyball, cheerleading, and dance team. Men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, track and field, and wrestling.

Central college has a number of extracurricular programs students can get involved in such as the Emerging Leaders Program, Central Volunteer Center, Hall Councils, Campus Activities Board, Student Senate, SOS Orientation Leaders, Resident Advisors, Leadership and Entrepreneurship Program, and a variety of fraternities and sororities. There are also campus ministries for those that wish to participate in religion while in college.
