Briar Cliff University

Briar Cliff University is a Franciscan Roman Catholic private liberal arts school located in Sioux City, Iowa. The campus consists of four residence halls, three academic buildings, an athletic facility, student center, and a chapel. The school has been in existence since 1930 when it was founded as Briar Cliff College.

It started out as a Catholic women’s college but officially became a coed facility in 1966 with the admission of 150 men. The school’s name was changed to Briar Cliff University in June 2001.

Educational Programs

The school offers 40 undergraduate, graduate, and pre-professional degree programs. Undergraduate and pre-professional programs can be completed online or on-site. To be considered for admission to the school, the applicant must have graduated from an accredited high school or have obtained a GED. The minimum G.P.A. is 2.0 and students must have scored 18 on the ACT or the equivalent on the SAT. If the student has been out of school for five or more years, these requirements may be waived. This is decided on a case by case basis.

Students who were homeschooled will need to submit a Briar Cliff Home School Competent Private Evaluation Form, documentation from their home school association or a GED, and official transcripts for schoolwork completed at all accredited intuitions. ACT scores may be required.

In addition to the normal application procedures, international students that don’t speak English must submit their TOEFL test scores. The minimum accepted score is 525 for the written test and 193 for the computerized test. International students must also submit certification regarding payment of tuition and proof of health insurance.

Briar Cliff University Tuition

For the 2012-2013 school year students can expect to pay the following tuition rates and fees:

  • Full-time undergraduate tuition: $12,260 per semester
  • Standard fees: $561 per semester
  • Estimated cost of books: $1,100 per year
  • Adult online degree program: $338 per credit
  • Graduate tuition: $320 to $526 per credit depending on degree
  • Graduate fees: $27 to $44 per credit depending on degree

Campus Life

The school provides coed on-campus housing. Some dormitories are only for freshmen while others contain a mix of first-year students and upperclassmen. The rooms are furnished and are monitored by Residents Assistants. The cost is $1,861 per semester for double occupancy rooms. Meal plans cost between $1,700 and $2,055 per semester depending on the number of meals purchased. The school also has lofts for rent for $129, which are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Briar Cliff University has athletic programs for men and women. Men’s sports programs include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, track and field, and wrestling. Women’s programs include softball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, track and field, volleyball, cheerleading, and dance team. Internationals students that want to participate in sport must meet specific requirements.

The school has approximately 38 student organizations where individuals can network and socialize with people that have similar interests. A few of those clubs include:

The Catholic faith is an integral part of the school. As such, the school has Mass on a daily basis, hosts prayer and bible study groups, and conducts the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults on a weekly basis for those that wish to convert to the religion. There are also yearly retreats that allow students to connect with others in the church in a non-educational atmosphere. Lastly, the school has chapters of The Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas groups.
