Ashford University

Ashford University is a private, for-profit school located in Clinton, Iowa. The school has a long history. It began 1893 as a boarding and day school for girls called Mount St. Clare Academy.

In 1918 the school was turned into Mount St. Clare College by the Sisters of St. Francis to fulfill the need for post-secondary education in the area. Mount St. Clare College was purchased by Bridgeport Education in 2005 and the name was changed to Ashford University. The school is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission.

Educational Programs

Ashford University has four colleges that offer students the opportunity to earn an associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree in approximately 50 programs that span a wide variety of disciplines. These degrees can be pursued through their online program or on-campus. Here is a sample of the educational programs available at the school.

Students can expand the scope of their educations by adding a minor to the Bachelor of Arts degree they are pursuing. Ashford University has 22 minor degree programs including Accounting, Business Economics, Entrepreneurship, Information Systems, Logistics Management, Marketing, and Public Administration.

For students that know they will be pursuing a master’s degree program, the school’s Smart Track program allows them to earn up to 9 graduate credits while they are earning their bachelor’s degree.

Admissions

Freshman applicants (defined as earning less than 30 college credits) must meet at least two of the three requirements to be considered for admission:

  • G.P.A of 2.0 or above from an accredited high school program, GED equivalency, or state-approved home school program
  • Ranking in the top 50 percent of the graduating class
  • Minimum ACT score of 18 or SAT score of 860

Transfer students are welcomed at Ashford University. Students must submit an application and official transcripts from all post-secondary schools attended. Generally, 100-level and above courses will transfer as long as the student achieved a grade of C- or better in those classes. A maximum of 90 credits will be applied towards a bachelor’s degree. Ashford University Tuition

Tuition and fees for each semester are as follows:

  • Full-time attendance: $7860
  • Per credit for part time (less than 11 credits): $458
  • Per credit for audited classes, senior citizens, and high school students: $230
  • Books: $500
  • Technology: $200 per semester/ $15 per credit for part time
  • Activity fee: $75 per semester/$6 per credit for part time
  • Graduation fee: $150

Students can pay for their tuition and fees using a cash plan, tuition reimbursement, direct bill plan, military tuition assistance, military veteran benefits, and financial aid.

Campus Life

Ashford University provides on-campus housing with configurations ranging from single-occupancy to quad-occupancy rooms. The cost of housing is $6,000 per year. On-campus parking is also allowed, but students must obtain a parking permit.

Students interested in participating in an athletic program have a wide variety to choose from. Men’s programs include baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, and track and field. Women’s programs consist of basketball, bowling, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

If sports are not your thing, you can join one of the college’s many student organizations such as the Anime United, Ashford University Pre-Law Society, AU Dance, Campus Pals, Concert Choir, Environmental Club Association, Hall Council, Mu Sigma Eta, Phi Beta Lambda, and Women of Color.
