Allen College Waterloo

Allen College is an educational facility that specializes in healthcare education. Located in Waterloo, Iowa, the school was founded in 1925 as two separate entities: Allen Memorial Hospital and Allen Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. The first graduating class consisted of 10 students. Today, Allen College helps thousands of students enter rewarding careers in the healthcare industry.

Educational Programs

Allen College primarily offers instruction in nursing, but has two schools that offer academic programs in radiography, nuclear medicine technology, medical laboratory science, and diagnostic medical sonography. At the School of Heath Sciences you can earn the following degrees:

      • Medical Laboratory Science

The School of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Science in Nursing, and Doctor of Nursing Practice. Allen College has partnerships with several colleges and universities including the University of Northern Iowa to provide general education instruction. The school offers distance learning education over the Internet. They also have a continuing education program for nurses that need to maintain their licensing.

Admissions

The admissions criteria differ depending on which program you are applying for. All general education work must be completed at a partner college before students become eligible transfer to Allen College to finish their degree. At least 25 hours of college credit must be earned with a minimum of a 2.7 G.P.A. Each program requires a different mix of prerequisite classes that need to be completed. For example, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing requires student to complete English Composition, Sociology, Psychology, Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Microbiology, and other classes that provide an educational foundation for the degree. It is best to contact the school for information about the specific admission requirements for the program you wish to enter.

Allen CollegeĀ Tuition

For the 2012-2013 academic year tuition and fee rates are as follows:

  • Allen College Tuition per Semester Credit Hour – $525
  • Laboratory Fee per Semester Credit Hour for classes with Laboratory/Clinical Components – $47
  • Student Services Fee per Allen Credit Hour – $24
  • Graduation Fee/Final Semester – $275
  • Application Fee (one-time fee) – $50
  • ATI Testing Fee/First Semester – $560
  • Registration Fee/First Semester – $100

For full-time undergraduate enrollment, students can expect to spend about $19,303 (fall and spring) or $7,833 (summer) for tuition, books, supplies, and fees. Full-time graduates can expect to pay $16,766 (fall and spring) and $2,452 (summer) per year for their education. Financial aid is available for eligible students including several scholarship opportunities.

Campus Life

On-campus housing is available at Allen College. Students share a three-bedroom suite that can accommodate up to six people. The suites are fully furnished and include a dining room, kitchen, washer and dryer, security system, and private entrance. Each bedroom in the suites contains a bed, desk, dresser, chair, and closet for each person. Students have access to phone, Internet, and cable television services. The cost for housing is between $4,575 and $5,700 per calendar year per student.

Currently, the school does not have an athletic program.
