Western Iowa Tech Community College

Western Iowa Tech Community College (WIT) is a junior college in Iowa. The main campus is located in Sioux Falls, but the school has other locations in Cherokee, LeMars, Mapleton, and Denison. The school was founded in 1966 to serve the 180,000 residents in six Iowa counties. Today, there are approximately 24,000 students enrolled in credit and non-credit classes.

Academics

WIT offers two-year liberal arts and career training programs in over 70 courses of study. The college also has community and continuing education for those that want to pursue a subject of interest or must maintain a license or credential. To help facilitate the learning process, WIT has a distance-learning program that allows students to take classes completely online or in combination with a regular classroom program. Courses range from 8 to 16 weeks depending on the number of meeting times per week. Students must have a computer and reliable access to the Internet.

Admissions

Western Iowa Tech Community College has an open-door policy for general admissions. Students possessing a high school diploma or equivalent will be accepted to the college. However, individual career programs may have additional admission requirements.

To apply for admission to WIT, potential students can submit an application online or in person. Applicants must take the Computerized Placement Test, which is used to help students select the best classes for their skill levels.

Cost

Tuition is based on Iowa residency. Here is how much it will cost to take classes at Western Iowa Tech Community College:

  • Tuition (resident): $128 per credit
  • Tuition (non-resident): $133 per credit
  • Online classes: $152 per credit
  • Fees: $15.50

Students may qualify for financial aid such as the Federal Pell Grants, Federal Stafford Direct Student Loans, or the Iowa Vocational-Technical Tuition Grants. The first step to getting this money for school is to fill out and submit the FAFSA. WIT also has a few in-house scholarships students can apply for.

Campus Life

The college has two student housing options. One is apartment-style living at Sun Ridge Court. Each apartment has 1 to 2 bedrooms that can fit 2 to 4 students. There are a few family suites for students that are married or have dependent children. Bur Oak Suites are suites that have four bedrooms and each student gets their own room. Both types of housing feature full kitchens and shared living spaces.

Students can take a break from studying and have some fun by joining the school’s softball team or taking part in the student events and activities happening throughout the year. Student clubs and organizations on campus include Anime Club, Beta Zeta Mu, Chess Club, Dance, Dragon Gaming, and Sioux Metropolitan Automation and Robotics.
