Southeastern Community College

Southeastern Community College (SCC) is a junior college in Iowa. The school has three locations: Keokuk, Burlington, and Ft. Madison. SCC was founded in 1967 as the result of a merger between Keokuk Community College and Burlington Junior College. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Approximately 3,000 students are enrolled in courses at the college.

Educational Programs

Southeastern Community College awards Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, and Associate of Applied Science degrees in a large selection of educational programs. Here is a brief list of what you can study at SCC:

The continuing education program allows professionals to receive the technical training needed to obtain or maintain their licensing or certifications. Others can use the program for personal enrichment or to explore topics of interest before diving headfirst into a degree program.

The school has a program for high school students called Jump Start. It provides students with the opportunity to take college courses while still in high school. Using this option, students can get a head start on their college education and some even complete a two-year degree by the time they graduate from high school. Since many school districts pay for students to participate, so it is a good way for students to save money on their education.

SCC has articulation agreements with a number of colleges and universities. Any credits that you earn will transfer to another Iowa school that SCC is partnered with and vice versa. It has also partnered with seven community colleges to provide students with the opportunity to take online classes.

Admissions

You must have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent to enter the career education or arts and sciences programs. Some programs have additional requirements that must be met before you can enter them. It is best to contact the school for admissions criteria for specific programs.

To apply for admission, you will need to complete the application, submit your transcriptions, and either take the Compass test or submit your ACT scores. New students must also go through orientation.

Costs

Tuition is charged based on residency status. Here is how much it will cost to get an education at Southeastern Community College.

  • Tuition and fees: $4,050 per nine months
  • Resident tuition: $142 per credit
  • Non-resident tuition: $147 per credit
  • Online tuition: $152 per credit
  • Books: $1,040 per nine months
  • Room and board: $5,800 per nine months

The financial aid office can help students obtain money for school. This includes getting funds from federal and state grants, federal loans, scholarships, and work-study opportunities. The first step to tapping into these funding sources is to submit the FAFSA.

Campus Life

Residence halls are available at the Burlington and Keokuk campuses for student housing. Room options consist of 2- or 4-person suites and single or double occupancy apartments. All rooms are furnished and housing amenities include laundry facilities, telephone, cable, and wireless Internet.

Students can participate in baseball, basketball, softball, or volleyball. The school also has intramural sports that are available all year. In addition to numerous student activities, SCC has several student clubs and organizations including the Art Club, Business Club, Computer Club, Nursing Club, and Student Board.
