Muscatine Community College

Located in Muscatine, Iowa, Muscatine Community College (MCC), along with Clinton and Scott Community Colleges, is part of the Eastern Iowa Community College District. The school was founded in 1929 which makes it the oldest one in the group. MCC recently underwent a renovation and opened the Jeff Koch Science Wing and McAvoy University Center in 2010. It also added the Muscatine Industrial Technology Center which is where several manufacturing educational programs are taught. About 1,800 students attend MCC.

Educational Programs

Muscatine is a junior college that awards Associate of Arts and college transfer degrees as well as provide career and technical training. In addition to traditional courses, students can take classes and even earn their degree online through the school’s distance learning program. Motivated high school students can earn college credit while still in school through the College Connection program. Muscatine has partnered with area high schools so that students can enroll in college courses that will go towards their graduation requirements and a college degree. By getting a head start, students in this program can graduate with a two-year degree technical or liberal arts degree earlier and get in the job market faster.

MCC also has a study abroad program. Students can earn college credit taking classes in other parts of the world such as Brazil, France, India, England, Denmark, and Costa Rica. To take part in this program you must be at least 18 years of age, completed 12 credits or more including one semester of a foreign language, have a 2.75 GPA or hire, and obtained the minimum English and reading placement scores. Students also must secure approval from the International Program Office and the faculty member leading the program.

Admissions

Muscatine Community College is an open-admissions school. All students aged 16 and over that submit an application will be accepted. However, individual programs such as nursing may have additional admissions requirements, so it is best to check directly with the school. Students still need to submit ACT scores and take the Compass test so they can be placed in the most appropriate classes for their level of knowledge.

Costs

Muscatine bases tuition on whether or not the student is a permanent resident of Iowa. Here is a breakdown of the tuition and fees:

  • In State: $128 per credit
  • Out of State: $192 per credit
  • Online Classes: $150 per credit (includes $28 technology fee)

Financial assistance is available in a number of forms. Students can apply for loans, scholarships, and grants through the federal government by submitting the FAFSA form. The Muscatine Community College Foundation also gives away scholarships to students in need.

Campus Life

There is housing available at Muscatine. The school’s current facilities are managed by The Villas and several more complexes are being built. Housing consists of 2 to 4 bedroom units with private furnished rooms for each student, onsite laundry facilities, and a media room.

Students who love sports can participate in men’s or women’s intercollegiate or intramural programs that include soccer, baseball, golf, softball, volleyball, and basketball. If you would rather network with likeminded people, you can join a student organization such as Student Senate, Phi Theta Kappa, or Business Professionals of America.
