Marshalltown Community College

Marshalltown Community College (MCC) is part of the Iowa Valley Community College District (IVCCD). This district also includes Ellsworth Community College, Iowa Valley Grinnell, and the Iowa Valley Continuing Education facility. The school is located in Marshalltown, Iowa. It was founded as Marshalltown Junior College in 1927, but changed names when it became a part of the Iowa Valley Community College District in 1966. Iowa Valley Grinnell is the school’s satellite campus that offers college courses to the residents in Poweshiek County. Approximately 2,000 students attend MCC.

Educational Programs

Marshalltown Community College offers two-year vocation and technical training programs as well as college preparatory degrees. The programs are designed to get students into their careers quickly and prepare them to tackle the last two years of their bachelor’s degrees. Here are some of the programs you can study at MCC.

If time is a factor, Marshalltown Community College offers an online program for many of these degrees. Online classes allow students to complete the coursework in their own time. Since not all classes are offered over the Internet every semester, students should work with an advisor to plan the coursework for their degrees.

Other programs available at MCC include High School Completion/GED, English as a Second Language, career training services, and continuing education.


MCC accepts all students that have a high school diploma or equivalent as well as transfer students for general admission. Specific programs offered at the college may have additional admissions criteria. High school students are also welcomed to enroll in MCC. They can earn college credit that applies to their graduation requirements and college degrees. In fact, Marshalltown has an accelerate program that allows high school students to earn an Associate of Arts degree in one year.

To place students in courses that fit their level of skill and education, all applicants must take the Compass exam or submit ACT scores.


Marshalltown charges the following tuition and fees:

  • Iowa Resident Tuition: $144 per credit
  • Non-Resident/International Student Tuition: $153 per credit
  • Fee for Distance Learning Courses: $13 per credit
  • Technology Fee: $17 per credit
  • Student Fee: $9 per hour

Financial aid is available to student that need help paying for their tuition. Students should fill out and submit the FAFSA form as soon as possible to determine if they qualify for federal financial aid. MCC can help students locate scholarships, grants, and other funding opportunities. More information can be obtained from the school’s financial aid office.

Campus Life

Marshalltown has on-campus housing. The residential buildings contain suites that can accommodate up to four students apiece. Resident Assistants are assigned to each floor and provide assistance to students. All rooms are furnished with a bed, computer desk and chair, and dresser. The suites contain a furnished living room and fully-equipped kitchen. Utilities and internet services is included in the housing cost. Students are responsible for cable service.

For fun, students can join an athletic program or one of the school’s clubs and student organizations. The sports programs available at MCC include baseball, basketball, cheer squad, cross country, soccer, softball, and volleyball. Available student organizations include Honors Program, Multicultural Club, Phi Theta Kappa, Student Senate, and College Republicans.
