Iowa Lakes Community College

Iowa Lakes Community College is a junior college in Iowa that services five counties: Algona, Emmetsburg, Spencer, Estherville, and Spirit Lake. The school was established in 1967 and is the result of the merger between several preexisting junior colleges. Iowa Lakes is accredited by the Commission on Institution of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

You will also find a number of college transfer programs and Iowa Lakes has bachelor degree completion programs with a number of 4-year institutions including Briar Cliff University, Buena Vista University, and University of Iowa. The school also offers adult basic education, GED preparatory courses, continuing education, and short-term vocational training programs.

Students have the option of taking classes on campus, over the Internet, or using television courses. Evening classes are available for students that work full time during the day and want to pursue an education in their free time.

Admissions

Iowa Lakes Community College has an open admissions policy. Students must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Those without a diploma or GED may still be admitted to the school but limited to certain programs. Individual programs may have additional requirements for entry such as a medical examination or assessment. Admission to the college and all programs is on a first-come, first-served basis.

International students must complete the TOEFL test and submit their scores. The minimum scores accepted are 500 for the paper based test, 173 for the computer based, and 61 for the Internet based. You must also submit a 1,500 word essay on the reasons you want to go to school in America, and provide financial documentation proving you have enough money to cover your school expenses.

Iowa Lakes Community College Tuition Costs

Tuition and fees at Iowa Lakes are charged based on residency status. You will be required to submit documentation proving you are a permanent resident of Iowa. The cost of getting an education at the college is as follows:

  • Tuition (resident): $139 per credit
  • Tuition (non-resident): $141 per credit
  • Audited classes: $135 per credit
  • ECollege: $150 per credit
  • Education to Go: $150 per credit
  • Student Activity Fee: 2.25 per credit
  • General Fee: $5.50 per credit
  • Housing: $2,500 to $2,775 depending on accommodations

Individual programs may charge additional fees.

Students can pay for their education by obtaining federal financial aid. Iowa Lakes also has several scholarships available for eligible students and can provide information about other scholarships offered by external organizations.

Campus Life

On-campus housing is available at three of the school’s locations: Emmetsburg, Estherville, and Spencer. Students have the option of living in a dormitory or apartment-style complex. Rooms are furnished with beds, desks and chairs, dressers, closets, and lamps. Some include basic cable and Internet access.

Those that enjoy participating in sports will have many options at Iowa Lakes Community College. Available sports programs for men and women include baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, dance, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, wrestling, softball, and volleyball.
