Iowa Central Community College

Iowa Central Community College is a two-year institution located Fort Dodge, Iowa. The school was formed in 1966 by the merging of three junior colleges: Fort Dodge, Eagle Grove, and Webster City. Approximately 6,200 students attend Iowa Central and notable alumni include Jon Jones, Troy Stedman, and Iowa Senator Daryl Beall. The school is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission.

The school has a partnership with Buena Vista College in Storm Lake that provides students an opportunity to pursue a bachelor’s degree. Students complete the first two years at Iowa Central before transferring to Buena Vista to finish the remaining two years of the degree. In addition to that, Iowa Central has several pre-professional programs including Pre-Law, Pre-Medicine, Pre-Veterinary Medicine, and Pre-Dentistry.

The distance learning program at Iowa Central allows students to take online and televised classes. Online programs consist of FlexNet which is characterized by minimum deadlines as well as 8-week and 15-week online courses. Televised courses (ICN) are conducted at specific locations.

Lastly, high school students can begin earning college credit during their junior and senior years as part of the Senior Year Plus Program. Students take classes through FlexNet or online.


Iowa Central has an open-door admissions policy. Students that graduate (or on track to graduate) from an accredited high school program or equivalent will be accepted. However, individual programs may have additional requirements for entry. For example, students entering health programs may be required to complete information packets. Students must also pass any prerequisites required by the program with a C grade or better.

All applicants are required to take the Compass, Asset, ACT, SAT, or ITED test. The scores obtained from these exams will be used to place students in the courses that match their knowledge and skills. International students must show evidence of proficiency with the English language by passing the TOEFL test with a minimum score of 450 (paper based), 133 (computer based), or 45 (Internet based).

International students must also show evidence that they have enough funds to cover the cost of their educational and living expenses for the entire time they will be a student at Iowa Central.

Iowa Central Community College Costs

Tuition is based on residency, which is determined by the reason the person is in Iowa and the length of time he or she has lived in the state. You will be required to submit three pieces of documentation proving your residency status. Tuition and fees for the 2012 to 2013 school year are as follows:

  • Tuition (resident): $126 per credit
  • Tuition (non-resident): $189 per credit
  • Online tuition: $305 per credit
  • Online tuition (military students): $250 per credit
  • Student fee: $14 per credit

There are a variety of ways students can pay for their education. Federal aid in the form of loans, grants, and scholarships can be obtained by submitting the FAFSA form. Iowa Central also has a number of internal scholarships for eligible students.

Campus Life

Approximately 1,068 students live on campus. Housing at Iowa Central consists of fully furnished apartments that come equipped with full kitchens, a dining room, living room, phone, cable, and Internet access. Meal plans and mailboxes are included. The apartments have two bedrooms and are furnished with bunk beds, desks and chairs, a sofa, and a dining table and chairs. Laundry facilities are located onsite.

There is a robust athletic program at the school. Students can participate in a number of sports including baseball, basketball, rodeo, soccer, swimming, track and field, wrestling, football, golf, cheer squad, and volleyball. There are also a wide variety of student clubs and organizations including student government and theatre.
