Indian Hills Community College

Indian Hills Community College is a public two-year school located in Iowa. The college has campuses in Centreville and Ottumwa. The college was formed in 1966 when three existing schools were combined. Ottumwa has the largest campus which consists of residence halls, a student center, and the Advance Technology Center. Approximately 3,800 attend Indian Hills Community College. Notable alumni include Tom Arnold, Ernest Brown, Glen Kuiper, and Rick Upchurch.

The college also offers continuing education courses for people that want to learn a new skill or need to maintain a license or certification. Students can take classes on site or online through the distance learning program. They also have several programs that allow qualified high school students to earn college credit that will count towards their graduation and college degree.


Indian Hills has an open admissions policy. Anyone who applies to the school will be accepted. However, specific educational programs offered by the school may have additional requirements for entry. It is best to visit the school’s website to find out what entry criteria, if any, there is for a specific program.

International students that want to attend Indian Hills must fill out the International Student Data sheet, obtain a TOEFL score of 173 (computer based) or higher, and submit documentation showing they have the financial resources to pay for their education. Additional information may be required by the U.S. embassy/consulate when applying for a student visa.

Applications can be submitted online, in person, or by mail. All students must either submit their ACT, SAT, or Compass scores or sit for the Compass test. These test scores are used to place students in the classes most appropriate for their skill levels. A few programs such as Criminal Justice and Digital Forensics require students to submit to a background check. Indian Hills Community College Tuition Costs

Tuition is based on residency. Appropriate documentation supporting Iowa residency claims must be submitted with your application.

  • Tuition (resident): $144 per credit
  • Tuition (non-resident): $216 per credit
  • Books: $336 per semester
  • ICN and WWW courses: $5 fee per credit

Students can obtain federal financial aid in the form of loans, scholarships, and grants by filling out the FAFSA. Indian Hills offers two school scholarships that award up to a year’s worth of tuition. The school also has a work-study program and accepts payment for tuition from Veteran Affairs Education Benefit programs.

Campus Life

Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa and Centerville has on-campus housing available. The dormitories are supervised by adults that live in the buildings. All dorms are non-smoking and contain either double-occupancy rooms or apartment-style units that come furnished. Internet, telephone, and cable are provided. The campus is continuously patrolled by security officers.

The school has a number of programs available to help students socialize, build relationships, and have fun. For sports, men and women can participate in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, volleyball, and cheer squad. Student organizations found on campus include Student Senate, Allies for Equality, Automotive Technician Club, Bridge City Explosion Show Choir, Digital Forensics Club, Laser Club, and Phi Theta Kappa.
